Teenager in court over possession of cannabis

A 19-year-old, Louis Joshua, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of cannabis.

The defendant, of no fixed address is standing trial on a one-count charge of possession of Cannabis Sativa.

He, however pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 14 at about 02:00 p.m in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant had in his possession, weeds suspected to be Cannabis and other illicit drugs.

Oriyomi said that the offence contravened the provissions of Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act LFN 2004.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Sept. 25 for hearing. (NAN)
