Jonathan arrives in Mali on ECOWAS peace mission

The political tension in Mali was as a result of the May 2020 legislative elections which placed Keïta’s administration and the opposition, M5-RFP coalition on a collision course

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived in Bamako as the leader of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) peace mission to Mali.

Jonathan made this known via a post on his twitter handle on Thursday.

“I’m optimistic that our mission will yield positive results. Our message of peace and progress has so far been well received by stakeholders,” he said in the tweet.

ECOWAS had earlier appointed former President Jonathan as special envoy to lead its mediation mission in Mali to resolve the worsening socio-political situation in the west African country.

As a special envoy, Jonathan is expected to facilitate dialogue with major stakeholders in Mali, including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, opposition leaders, civil society and religious organisations.

The political tension in Mali was as a result of the May 2020 legislative elections which placed Keïta’s administration and the opposition, M5-RFP coalition on a collision course.

President of ECOWAS, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, had also noted that Jonathan was appointed given his position as former President of Nigeria and his role and contributions to the maintenance of peace, security and stability in the region.
