EFCC arrests 21 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos

The Lagos Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested 21 suspected internet fraudsters in a sting operation at Applewood Estate, Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos State.

The Commission said the operation was carried out at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026, to apprehend suspects accused of obtaining money from unsuspecting victims through gift cards, cryptocurrencies and international money transfers by impersonating individuals.

In a statement on Monday, the EFCC said the operation yielded the arrest of 21 suspects and the recovery of five exotic cars.

According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects were apprehended professionally following diligent pre-arrest surveillance and reconnaissance of their activities.

It said a young lady who attempted to obstruct the operation by making telephone calls to alert the suspects was held and her phone confiscated until the conclusion of the operation, after which the phone was released to her.

The EFCC disclosed that preliminary investigations have indicted 19 of the suspects, while two have been released.

It added that all indicted suspects will be arraigned in court immediately.

The Commission stressed that the operation was carried out professionally, with no record of harassment, intimidation or unlawful arrest, and urged the public to continue to support its fight against economic and financial crimes.

“The Commission is open to constructive engagement by well-meaning Nigerians but blackmailers and alarmists will not be allowed to sabotage its mandate,” the statement added.
