Bread makers, among other bakers confirmed the latest plan by millers to arbitrarily increase the price of the commodity.
Dateline Nigeria had reported that Master Bakers in Bauchi mull 20% increase in the price of bread, citing increase in the price of flour.
According to some bakers, the development is responsible for running many bakers out of business, while the rest are running at a loss.
Tosan Jemide, President of Bread Makers Association of Nigeria (BMAN) said the since the beginning of the pandemic, millers have increased the price of flour over six times.
According to him, if bread makers were to adjust to the price, a loaf of bread would be selling for N800.
“Our businesses are crumbling. We bakers are just unfortunate because we are sandwiched in the middle. It is not only flour, the same thing with other ingredients – margarine, sugar, all our ingredients have dollarized components,” he said.
Alhaji Raji Omotunde who is the President of Master Bakers’ Association of Nigeria (MBAN) said the government should iron out issues concerning foreign exchange with the millers.
“While the millers have always complained about foreign exchange the government should sit them down and iron out what the problem is, stressing that government should come up with methodology to manage the crisis,” he said.
