Archbishop Peter Jatau dies at 89

Archbishop Emeritus Peter Yariyok Jatau has died at the age of 89 years, after spending 57 years as a priest and 48 years as a bishop.

Archbishop Jatau died on Wednesday after a protracted illness.

He was born on August 5, 1931 in Marsa Kaje in Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Jatau was ordained Priest of Kaduna on July 7th 1963. He was ordained Bishop on November 5th 1972 as the Titular Bishop of Velebusdus at the age of 41. He was appointed the Coadjutor Archbishop of Kaduna Archdiocese on June 26th 1972 – April 10th 1975.

He succeeded as the second Metropolitan Archbishop of Kaduna Archdiocese on April 10th 1975 – November 16th 2007, retired and became an emeritus.

Before his death today, Archbishop Jatau was the oldest Nigerian Bishop by age. Now, Bishop Emeritus Gregory Ochiagha is the current oldest Nigerian Bishop by age, born August 31st 1931, 89 years old.
