Dindima community in Bauchi Local Government has embarked on a project to exhume a petroleum truck that fell into the river and got buried by sand nearly 60 years ago.
Our correspondent gathered from the community that the truck was involved in an accident.
The truck remained inside the river up to this time and now the community is making efforts to exhume it and remove it from the River.
Spectators from all walks of life gathered to watch the effort of the people that embarked on the project whether they will succeed or not.
Village Head of Dindima Mallam Sale Ubandoma said he was there to see for himself what was going on in the river because he heard that some people came with earthmoving equipment trying to exhume the accident truck.
Ubandoma said he also wanted to hear from the people who gave them the permission to remove the truck from the River.
He said when the car had an accident a long time ago the people inside the trucks survived, adding that when the accident occurred, workers of the construction company building the famous Dindima river bridge tried to remove the truck but failed.
“They brought all the working tools needed, unfortunately, there was a heavy rainfall came on that fateful night, and the move was aborted,” he said.
A 67-year-old resident of Dindima, Ibrahim Muhammad, said “the accident occurred in my presence even though I was between seven and eight years old. All effort made to remove the truck failed.”
He said he could still recall that they were washing their clothes in the river when they saw oil spillage in the water.
One of the people that embarked on the project Muhammadu Dindima said he is selling old vehicles spare parts, and that they want to remove the truck to see if they will get something useful out of it.
He said they collaborated with a trader from Kano and invested N200, 000 each in the project to make it successful.
