The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, on Saturday, paid an unscheduled operational visit to the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
During the visit, the CGC undertook an assessment tour of the Medium Security Custodial Centres (MSCC) Uyo and Ikot-Ekpene, where he evaluated the infrastructural condition, staff and inmate welfare, as well as existing security protocols.
He also addressed the inmate population, reassuring them of the Service commitment to their well-being and rehabilitation.
He highlighted the deliberate efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in repositioning the Service to meet its statutory mandate in line with global best practices.
In a separate session with personnel of the two custodial centres, the CGC emphasized the imperative of upholding professionalism, discipline, and strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as enshrined in the Service extant regulations.
He lauded their resilience and dedication to duty despite the unique challenges of the job.
Additionally, he informed the personnel that the 2025 Promotion Exercise is currently underway, with the second phase set to commence shortly.
Subsequently, the CGC paid a private courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, during which discussions were held on matters of mutual concern, particularly the proposed relocation of the MSCC Uyo to a new permanent site.
The relocation, once actualized, is expected to significantly enhance the correctional environment and support the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration process for inmates in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
The visit underscores the current leadership’s resolve to ensure a functional, secure, and humane correctional service, while strengthening stakeholder collaboration in the actualization of the Service’s core mandates.
