Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges previously shunned by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, even after their recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
Justices Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe judges were officially appointed to the Edo State High Court during a ceremony at the Government House in Benin City on Monday.
Governor Okpebholo urged the newly sworn-in judges to uphold the highest standards of conduct, ensure fair dispute resolution, protect citizens’ rights, and hold wrongdoers accountable.
He emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in the separation of powers and expressed his commitment to strengthening the judiciary in Edo State.
“I made a promise during my swearing-in to address this issue. Today, we are here to right this wrong,” Okpebholo said.
He highlighted that in June 2023, the NJC had recommended eight individuals for judicial appointments, but only five were sworn in by the previous administration, leaving out the three judges despite their clearance.
In response, Justice Osa, speaking on behalf of her colleagues, expressed gratitude to the governor for their swift appointment and pledged to serve with integrity.
She assured the governor that they would dispense justice impartially, without fear or favor, and prayed for a successful tenure for his administration.
