Bilingual rap star DJ AB (real name Haruna Abdullahi) has created a storm on social media after his tweet on the #EndSARS protest.
DJ AB, who raps in both Hausa and English, “SARS is not our problem in the north so we cant be facing kidnapping and banditry here and expect us join an #EndSars protest!”
After his tweet was tagged as bias and smacking of a sense of entitlement, the rapper, who will be 27 this coming December, defended himself.
“I strongly go against police brutality and all but regarding the #EndSARS protest, if we truly are ONE Nigeria then the same people protesting #EndSars should also be protesting #EndNorthBanditry,” he said.
Gimba Kakanda, a newspaper columnist, had asked the rapper: “You want Lagosians to lead the protests against the ravages of banditry and kidnapping in the North? Are placards that heavy to carry?”
“What sort of entitlement is this for God’s sake, man? Nobody owes you a protest, and definitely not people from other regions. They are protesting what kills them (police brutality), and that should inspire you to also protest what kills you too (banditry). That’s how it works,” Kakanded added.
DJ AB later backed down saying “The response by my brothers/sisters from the south to my previous tweets made me realize that coming together as ONE is the only way, and we cant fight two wars at the same time! So I urge the youth to Voice out know matter what! #EndSARS#EndNorthBanditry“
He also said “Lets #EndNorthBanditry and move SARS to Borno #EndSARS”
