Ex-Super Eagles player Tijjani Babangida moved to Abuja hospital as son dies

President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria and former Super Eagles player, Tijjani Babangida, who was involved in a fatal road accident along Kaduna-Zaria road on Thursday, has been moved to the Nizamiye (Turkish) Hospital in Abuja.

The Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games gold medallist was travelling from Kaduna to Zaria alongside his brother Ibrahim Babangida, wife Maryam Waziri, son Fadeel and maid when the accident occurred at Danmagaji in Zaria.

While Ibrahim, himself a former Nigerian international footballer, died on the spot, Tijjani, his wife, son and maid were taken to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH).

The son died Saturday morning and has since been buried after funeral prayer.

A family source told Dateline Nigeria that “Fadeel (Tijjani Babangida’s young child) died this morning. But the mother has had a facial surgery and is stable. But Tijjani has been referred to the Nizamiye hospital.”

The late Ibrahim Babangida, 47, was buried on Friday after funeral prayer at the Salamatu Kabir mosque in Kaduna. He is survived by a wife and daughter Fatima, as well as many siblings, including another Nigerian former Nigerian star Haruna Babangida.
