
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has said that 21 people died in a flood at Mokwa Local Government Area on Wednesday night.
The agency’s Director General, Ibrahim Hussaini, told reporters the flood was triggered by a heavy downpour that led to extensive damage across several communities.
Hussaini said rescue teams managed to save a woman and her two children who are receiving medical care for injuries and trauma at the Mokwa General Hospital.
“Twenty-one bodies have been recovered so far, and over 10 persons are still unaccounted for,” he stated, adding that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
The worst hit areas include Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town, where more than 50 homes were swept away, leaving residents homeless and communities in shock.

Meanwhile, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has sympathised with the people of Mokwa Local Government Area over the devastating flood in the area
In a message through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, describes the incident as saddening, heartbreaking and pathetic, especially with the resultant loss of many lives and property.
He expresses his deepest condolences to the families of those that lost their lives and property in the unfortunate incident, and prays that Allah will grant the deceased Aljanna Firdausi as well as grant quick recovery to the injured.
The governor directs the Niger State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant stakeholders to take immediate necessary actions while assessing the situation to ascertain the level of destruction with the view to bringing succour.
He called on the people of Mokwa to remain calm as the State Government will work tirelessly to ensure the safety of everyone.
