The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has condemned an armed attack on its personnel by a motorist later identified as a Department of State Services (DSS) operative during a routine traffic enforcement operation in Abuja.
According to the Corps, the incident occurred on Thursday, 21 May 2026, at about 3:20pm at the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command. Officers had flagged down a Toyota Carina driver for a suspected traffic violation.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the driver refused to stop, drove dangerously, and became hostile when officers approached for routine document checks.
Despite efforts by FRSC personnel to de-escalate the situation, the suspect allegedly drew a pistol and fired twice near the command, according to a statement signed by Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja.
FRSC said its personnel exercised restraint and professional discipline, disarming the assailant without loss of life. One marshal sustained minor bruises during the process.
The suspect was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force at Life Camp Police Station along with the firearm, ammunition, and vehicle.
Preliminary identification revealed he was a DSS personnel, and the case has been transferred to the appropriate state command for further investigation.
“The Corps Marshal commends the courage, professionalism, and maturity displayed by its personnel who resisted provocation and ensured that the situation did not degenerate into chaos,” the statement said.
Shehu Mohammed stressed that “no individual, regardless of status, rank, or agency affiliation, is above the law,” and urged security personnel to lead by example by complying with traffic regulations.
The FRSC called on all security agencies to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and mutual respect to ensure public safety.
