FRSC very vital to Nigeria’s security architecture, says Interior minister

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo has applauded the intelligence gathering capacity of the Federal Road Safety Corps when he stated that the Corps is very critical to the security architecture of Nigeria.

Olubunmi admonished that the country should leverage upon that reality, and take advantage of it for enhanced national security.

The statement came during his address at the 11th Valedictory Lecture Series of the Federal Road Safety Corps delivered by Retired Deputy Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem at the national headquarters of the Commission in Abuja on Wednesday 7 August, 2024.

The Minister tasked the Officers and Men of the Corps to be extraordinary in road safety management and continue exhibiting professionalism as they discharge their duties. According to him, the intelligence they gathered from the enhanced visibility of the Corps will help boost the security of the nation.

He further stated, “I believe FRSC has a role to play even within the internal security architecture of Nigeria.

Emphasising on the role played by the Corps to ensure safety on the highways, the minister noted that the FRSC had remained committed to its mandate of ensuring lives and property were safe including it contribution to national security

“We appreciate the support and recognition of your efforts and look forward to continue collaborating with you, he said.

In his remarks, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, thanked the Minister for his support and recognition of the FRSC’s role in internal security.

The Corps Marshal said that the Minister’s statement was a testament to the FRSC’s strategic position in the nation’s security framework adding that as a lead agency in road safety management, the FRSC had consistently demonstrated its capacity to adapt to emerging security challenges.

He said “in recent times, the FRSC has expanded its scope of operations to include intelligence gathering, surveillance, and enforcement of traffic laws. These efforts have significantly contributed to the reduction of road crashes and enhancement of national security.

Shehu Mohammed noted that the FRSC’s role in internal security is multifaceted saying that the Corps’ presence on the highways and roads provides a visible deterrence to criminal activities, while its intelligence gathering capabilities support other security agencies in their operations.

He further said the FRSC’s collaboration with other security agencies had also facilitated the sharing of intelligence and best practices, leading to a more coordinated approach to national security.

“Your strategic interventions have yielded remarkable results, and one notable achievement is the streamlined process for obtaining an international passport within just two weeks” he added.

According to him, FRSC will continue to evolve and adapt to emerging security challenges, we remaincommitted to our core mandate of ensuring road safety. The Corps’ efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities are closely tied to its contributions to national security,”he said.

The Corps Marshal assured that the FRSC would continue to work tirelessly to ensure road safety and contribute to national security.

You will recall that the retired DCM, Bisi Kazeem, delivered the 11th Valedictory Lecture, sharing his experiences and insights from his distinguished career in the FRSC.

His lecture highlighted the importance of collaboration and synergy among security agencies in achieving national security objectives. The event marked the end of DCM Kazeem’s 35 years of illustrious career in the FRSC and his contributions to road safety in Nigeria.
