A gas plant explosion caused panic at Liberty Junction, Byazhin in Abuja on Saturday morning after a driver driving against traffic crashed into a cooking gas retail outlet.
The FCT Police Command said it received a distress call at about 6:30 a.m. on September 27, 2026, from a resident reporting a fire outbreak at the gas plant.
A team from the Kubwa Police Division was deployed to the scene where they met a raging inferno that had engulfed the gas plant, nearby shops and other properties.
The police team contacted the Federal Fire Service, which responded and helped contain the fire.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep who was driving against traffic.
The driver reportedly lost control and crashed into the gas plant, triggering an explosion. The driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately.
Spokesperson of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said no casualties were recorded and normalcy has been restored in the area.
She said a manhunt for the erring driver is ongoing, adding that his identity has been established, while a detailed assessment of properties destroyed is yet to be determined.
