Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, on Saturday, presented a brand new bus and football kits to Gombe United Football Club ahead of the commencement of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Governor Yahaya made the presentation to Mr Hamza Soye, Executive Chairman, Gombe State Sports Commission, at a ceremony held at Pantami Stadium in Gombe.
He said the gesture by state government was to appreciate the club for securing promotion to NPFL during the 2020/2021 season.
Yahaya pledged to continue to support the club in their quest to stay in the NPFL and create a window of opportunities for the youths to go all out and conquer the world.
“My order to Gombe United is to go all out and conquer the Federal Republic of Nigeria in sports, particularly football and be our ambassadors in the world,” he said.
On the request for an increase in the monthly subvention to the club from N12 million to N20 million, Yahaya said he had granted the request with immediate effect.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman, Gombe State Sports Commission, Malam Hamza Adamu Soye, had thanked Governor Yahaya for his support towards ensuring the promotion of the team back to the NPFL.
Malam Soye stated that the state government had been giving the club a monthly subvention of N12 million but requested that with the new challenge, the money should be increased by N8 million.
The chairman of Gombe United Management, Dr Larry Daniel, expressed his appreciation to the governor for the gesture.
Daniel stated that the kits would go a long way in motivating the team to perform well in the NPFL.
He noted that the governor had been “very attentive to issues of Gombe United and I want to specially thank him for the support and encouragement so far.”
NAN reports that the club had on Sept. 11 secured promotion to NPFL after finishing second at the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight Play-off in Enugu.
The team was relegated from NPFL in 2018/ 2019 season.
