The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is mourning the loss of its band officers in road accident on the Kano-Zaria expressway on Sunday.
The officers were travelling back to Abuja in an 18-seater official bus from Kano State after accompanying the acting Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mrs Caroline Adepoju to the passing-out parade at the Immigration Training School in Kano when the accident occurred as a result of tyre burst.
Dateline Nigeria reports that a total of nine officers were involved in the accident.
The spokesman of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command Labaran Abdullahi, said two of the officers died on the spot while seven others were badly injured and taken to the hospital.
A video trending on social media platforms showed bodies of the affected immigration officers on the road while sympathisers were seen trying to resuscitate some of them.
The NIS has yet to release an official statement on the incident. But a post on its X, formerly Twitter, handle showed that the service is mourning.
While the Public Relations Officer of NIS Dr Dotun Aridegbe, could not be reached, sources informed Dateline Nigeria that the service wanted to brief the families of those involved in the accident before releasing an official statement.
