The Independent National Electoral Commission has expressed its readiness to conduct the forthcoming 2023 governorship and House of Assembly election in Sokoto State.
The National Commissioner in charge of the elections in Sokoto State, Major General Modibo Alkali (retd.), stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting with the leadership of political parties ahead of the forthcoming election.
Speaking at the state collation centre on Tuesday, Alkali assured leaders of political parties present at the meeting that the commission under his watch will ensure a hitch-free election.
He reaffirmed that the commission has concluded its reconfiguration work on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machine for the polls.
He said INEC will not tolerate anyone who goes against the electoral act during the election.
“I have the mandate to ensure whoever causes problems during the election no matter how highly placed such a person is will be arrested.
“After such a person is arrested, he will be paraded before the public and thereafter taken to Abuja to be handed over to the IGP for prosecution ” he added
Meanwhile, the state Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Isa Sadiq Acida, urged INEC to defer the distribution of sensitive information from Wednesday to Thursday for security reasons.
He said the materials will require adequate security which he said may not be available.
He commended INEC for the preparation made so far for the elections.
In his remarks, the state chairman of the PDP, Bello Aliyu Goronyo, while commending INEC for their program so far, advised the commission to call all the candidates to order in relation to their utterances ahead of the election. (PUNCH)
