International Day of the Girl Child: Kebbi girls make history

The 2020 International Day of the Girl Child otherwise known as Day of the Girl Child is an annual event declared by United Nations to celebrate the Girl Child and accord priority to her education and welfare.

This year’s theme for the International Day of the Girl Child is “My Voice, Our Equal Future”.

It is a series of hybrid activities (Some virtual some Physical) from October 8 to 12th, 2020 observed worldwide. This year the celebration has taken a different turn due to the dreaded Coronairus pandemic. States were zoned to one State for the activities in line with NCDC guidelines.

Thus, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara ctates converged on Sokoto for the celebration with each state presenting 10 girls from Primary to JSS classes from nine local government areas.

On arrival, the girls were engaged in various educational activities followed by election of leaders.

Interestingly, Barakat Suleiman and Aisha Yahaya from Dandi and Bagudo local Government Areas of Kebbi State won the Presidential and Time keepers positions.

The formidable contingent as well as representatives of Kebbi State made the state proud by emerging winners for the coveted positions.

The Kebbi girls were under the watchful eyes of High Level Women Advocates (HILWA) members namely Haj Binta Abdulhameed and Haj Rabi Isa Mohammed. The advocates checked and scrutinised stories written by Kebbi Students to ensure their victory
