Hamas militants fired thousands of rockets and sent dozens of fighters into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday, killing dozens and stunning the country.
Israel said it is now at war with Hamas and launched airstrikes in Gaza, vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.”
Israeli media report said the number of people killed in Israel since the Hamas militant attack began early this morning has risen to at least 250.
The health ministry has said that another 1,452 people have been taken to hospital, with 18 in a critical condition and another 267 described as severe.
Hospitals in both southern Israel and Gaza have been inundated with casualties.
On the other hand, a Palestinian health ministry official has told the BBC that at least 232 people have been killed in Gaza since Israeli strikes started this morning.
At least 1,790 people were injured, according to the ministry.
