Jigawa law commission resolves 20-year-old inheritance case

The Community Law Center department of the Jigawa Justice Sector and Law Reform Commission has resolved a case of denial of inheritance that lasted for 20 years in Jama’ar Malam Hassan village of Yankwashi Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The deceased family Yusufa M Habu, Saminu M Habu, Ilyasu M Habu and their mother Halima M Habu complained that their farmland which was left behind by their late breadwinner has been held by his brother Ibrahim Muhammad who refused to release it to her and the children.

The widow added that several efforts were made to get the farmland back but her late husband’s brother refused over the years, according to a statement on Saturday by the Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Ministry of Justice Zainab Baba Santali.

The complaint was made to the commission where its legal officers tried to mediate between the parties but the trustee of the farmland refused and took the matter to court.

The case was heard before the Sharia Court in Garin Gudunya, where a judgment was made in favour of the deceased’s family. The court directed Ibrahim Muhammad to return the farmland to the deceased family.
