Pupils from Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have emerged overall winners of the 2026 Kaduna State Basic Schools Sports Competition with 35 medals.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was organised by the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) as part of activities to promote pupils’ holistic development.
NAN also reports that the two-day competition featured pupils who emerged champions at the local government area and zonal levels across the 23 LGAs of the state.
The events which is described as the biggest event of the tournament included football, volleyball, chess, scrabble, and track and field.
At the end of the competition on Wednesday in Kaduna, medals and awards were presented to outstanding teams and contingents.
Chikun LGA won the female volleyball event, while Kaduna South emerged first and Chikun second in the male volleyball competition.
Lere secured third position in male volleyball.
In football, Chikun LGA emerged first, followed by Kaduna South LGA in second position and Lere LGA clinched third position.
Kaduna North LGA finished overall second, while Jema’a LGA emerged overall third with 18 medals.
Chikun LGA also dominated the track and field events, while Kaura LGA was adjudged the most disciplined contingent.
Dauda Musa, a national chess competition champion from Lere LGA, was also present at the event.
The Executive Chairman of KADSUBEB, Malam Mubarak Muhammad, described the successful completion of the competition as a significant achievement that brought happiness and unity among pupils and teachers.
Muhammad, represented by Dr Christy Alademerin, Permanent Member, Human Resources Management, said the competition strengthened the spirit of oneness among participants by bringing them together to pursue a common goal.
Muhammad urged pupils who won awards to celebrate their achievements while encouraging those who did not win to remain positive.
“There is no winner, there is no loser; it is just a family thing,” he said.
He said KADSUBEB was committed to supporting activities that promote teamwork, discipline, mental alertness, and physical fitness among pupils.
He noted that sports remained important to the holistic development of pupils and could contribute to improved academic performance.
He reaffirmed the board’s commitment to supporting Gov. Uba Sani’s education agenda of providing quality, inclusive, and all-round education for children across Kaduna State. (NAN)
