Kano police arrest 873 suspects over armed robbery, kidnapping, others

The Kano State Police Command headed by Commissioner of Police (CP) Salman Dogo Garba announced the arrest of suspects over armed robbery, kidnapping and other crimes.

The Commissioner of Police addressed a press conference on Monday at the headquartersin Bompai, detailing efforts of the command in containing violence by criminals disguised as protesters.

He said the Kano State Police Command has worked diligently and professionally towards addressing the aftermath of these events, and these efforts resulted in the arrest of 873 suspects and recovery of large quantity of exhibits as follows;

  • Arrest and prosecution of six hundred (600) suspects for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson.
  • Arrest and prosecution of One hundred and Fifty (150) suspects for violating the curfew enforced by the Kano State Government.  
  • Arrest of an additional six (6) suspects linked with masterminding the destruction, setting ablaze and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP) are undergoing investigation.
  • Arrest and transfer of seventy-six (76) suspects flying Russian flags, including a foreigner to Force Headquarters, Abuja for discreet investigation on charges of sedition.
  • Arrest of forty-one (41) suspects for other major crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft, etc.
  • Recovery of two (2) AK-47 Exhibit Rifles and other substantial properties looted by the hoodlums at Audu Bako Secretariat NCC Office, High Court Complexes, Kano Printing Press (KPP), Super Markets, etc.

Despite the challenges posed by the recent protest, it is important to highlight some of the achievements recorded by the Police Command in crime prevention, management, and control within the period under review.

The Command has remained resolute and steadfast in its duty to protect the lives and properties of all residents in Kano State.

Through proactive policing strategies and community engagement, we have successfully achieved tremendous successes within the period under review with a summary as follows:  

ARREST

i. Two (2) suspected kidnappers

ii. Five (5) suspected armed robbers 

iii. Eight (8) suspected car thieves 

iv. Two (2) human trafficking suspects

v. One (1) notorious drug dealer

vi. Twenty-three (23) suspected Thugs (Yan Daba)

RESCUE

 Thirteen (13) trafficking victims 

RECOVERY

i. Two (2) AK-47 Rifles and One (1) Beretta Pistol 

ii. Forty-seven (47) live ammunition 

iii. Eight (8) motor vehicles 

iv. Four (4) sacks containing Exol Tablets

v. Two (2) Bajaj Boxer Motorcycles

vi. Cash, sum of nine million, four hundred and forty-two thousand naira (₦9,442,000:00).

vii. Twenty-two (22) cows, fifteen (15) sheep, and four (4) donkeys.

4.  The Kano State Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and protecting the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.

DETAIL OF CASES

1.  ARREST OF ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT AND RECOVERY OF MOTOR VEHICLE:

On 01/08/2024 at about 05:30pm, based on information report received from a good Samaritan, a team of Policemen while on patrol arrested one Bello Rabi’u, ‘m’, 35 years old of Yakudima Estate, Fagge LGA, Kano with recovery from him a Motor Vehicle, Golf, Green in color with Reg No: NSR 793 ZQ.

During the course of investigation, the suspect confessed to having conspired with his gang members and launched several armed robbery attacks mostly at the filling stations within Ungogo and neighboring areas. The case is under investigation.

2.  ARREST OF CAR THEFT SYNDICATE AND RECOVERY OF MOTOR VEHICLE ROBBED AT GUN POINT:

On 02/08/2024 at about 02:00pm, information was received from a good Samaritan that some unknown hoodlums attacked and snatched a Motor vehicle, Toyota Corolla LE, red in color with Reg No: KUJ 140 JT from innocent citizen at gun point in Abuja.

On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police directed a team of detectives from the Anti-car theft unit to recover the vehicle and arrest the suspect(s).

Consequently, the team swung into action and recovered the vehicle along Gadar Tamburawa in Kumbutso LGA, Kano. Two suspects were arrested; Suleiman Isah, ‘m’, 22 years old and Umar Garba Muhammad, ‘m’ of Abuja.

Also, the vehicle was recovered with an additional Honda car key, spray teargas and electric shocker from them. The case is under investigation.

3.  ARREST OF NOTORIOUS DRUG DEALER AND RECOVERY OF 4 SACKS CONTAINING EXOL TABLETS:

On 03/08/2024 at about 05:30pm, based on credible information received from a good Samaritan, a team of detectives trailed and arrested a notorious drug dealer, Nasiru Adam, ‘m’, 25 years old of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano in possession of four (4) Bags containing Exol Tablets. The suspect confessed to the crime with the case under investigation.

4.  ARREST OF TWO (2) SUSPECTED HUMAN TRAFFICKING SUSPECTS AND RESCUE OF 13 TRAFFICKED VICTIMS:

On 03/08/2024 at about 04:15pm, a team of Policemen attached to Tsanyawa Division while on stop and search operation along Tsanyawa Federal High Way, Kano intercepted a Golf Wagon Blue in color with Reg no: NSR 169 AJ conveying thirteen (13) female teenagers including the Driver, Shafi’u Salisu, ‘m’, 25 years old of Bachirawa Quarters Kano and one agent Rebecca Adebayo, ‘f’, 22 years old of Kwara State.

Investigation revealed that the victims were from different States in Nigeria heading to Libya lured and deceived by their respective agents. The case will be transfer to Naptip for further investigation.

6.  ARREST OF THREE (3) SUSPECTED CAR THIEVES AND RECOVERY OF TWO (2) STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLES:

On 04/08/2024 at about 08:00am, a team of Policemen attached to Anti-car theft unit while on intelligence-led operation intercepted and arrested the following suspects;

(1) Abdullah Suleiman, ‘m’, 45 years old

(2) Ashiru  Muhammad Aka Mekwal, ‘m’, 40 years old

(3) Ishak Yusha’u, ‘m’, 32 years old, all of Kurna Asabe Quarters, Kano driving a motor vehicle Golf  III Saloon Maroon in color with Reg no. AGL 924 BF on reasonable suspicion.

During the investigation, they confessed to having stolen the motor vehicle and further confessed to the case of theft of Toyota Corolla Gold in color at Janguza Market Kano which they led the team to recovery of the vehicle at Gombe State. The case is under investigation.

7.  ARREST OF THREE (3) SUSPECTED CAR THIEVES AND RECOVERY OF TWO (2) STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLES:

On 05/08/2024 at about 01:00pm, a report was received from a good Samaritan that some armed robbery suspects stormed Kurna Quarters, Kano to carry out an operation.

On receipt of the report, a team of operatives was dispatched and arrested the following Armed Robbers with the support of vigilante members; (i) Abdullah Isah ‘m’ 22 years old (ii) Samaila Ibrahim ‘m’ 38 years old (iii) Ibrahim Gwani ‘m’ 35 years old, all of Kurna Asabe Quarters, Kano.

Their operational motor vehicle Honda Accord Ash in color was recovered. During the investigation, the suspects led the team to Gwarzo LGA where a stolen motor vehicle Golf III Station Wagon red in color was recovered. The case is under investigation.

8.  RECOVERY OF TWO (2) STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLES:

On 03/07/2024 at about 2:00 pm, a report was received from a Good Samaritan that two motor vehicles; Pontiac Vibe Dark Ash and Peugeot 307 ash color unregistered suspected to be stolen were abandoned in Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.

On receipt of the report, team of detectives was detailed to the scene and recovered the motor vehicles with the investigation in progress.

9.  ARREST OF ADDITIONAL ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT AND RECOVERY OF TWO MOTORCYCLES, MONEY SUM OF N4,456,000 AND COWS:

Following  the  arrest of suspected armed robber one Hassan Iliya on 05/07/2024 at about 6:00pm by Police Operatives and recovery from him a sack containing two (2) AK-47 rifles and money sum of Four Million, Nine Hundred and Eighty-Six Thousand Naira (N 4,986,000:00), man hunt has been lunch on the remaining suspects.

Sustained follow up coupled with technical intelligence-led operation, one of the syndicate member; Mamuda Sada, ‘m’, 40 years old of  Matazu LGA, Katsina State on 06/07/2024.

Additional sum of Four Million Four Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand Naira (N 4,456,000:00), two motorcycle Bajaj, cows and donkeys suspected to be rusted were also recovered. The case is under investigation.

10.  RAID OF CRIMINAL HIDEOUTS AND BLACK SPORTS:

Raids conducted by the operational Officers of the Command between 1st to 10th of August, 2024 led to the arrest of twenty-three (23) suspects and recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs. The suspects have been charged to court for prosecution.

11.  ARREST OF TWO (2) SUSPECTS FOR KIDNAPPING AND CULPABLE HOMICIDE:

In continuation with the case of kidnapping incidents reported at the Command on 05/06/2024 by residents of Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano, thus: (i) Sometimes in the year 2023, one Aliyu Alhassan, ‘m’, 48 years old, of Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State was kidnapped by unknown person(s) and a ransom of sixty-million naira (N60,000,000:00) was demanded.

Instead of reporting the incident to the Police then, the relatives resorted to payment of ransom of fifteen million naira (N15,000,000:00), but the victim is yet to be released. (ii) On 01/06/2024, one Abba Abubakar, ‘m’, 30 years old of the same address was also kidnapped.

The kidnappers after demanding a ransom claimed to have masterminded the kidnapping of the first victim and that they are both held hostage with them. On receipt of the reports, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Salman Dogo Garba raised a team of detectives from the Command’s Anti-kidnapping Squad and directed the rescue of the victims and arrest of the culprit(s).

Consequently, sustained follow-up coupled with technical intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of the principal suspect; Abdulazeez Adamu, ‘m’, 35 years old of the same address as the victims at Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.

On preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to have conspired with the first victim brother one Abdullahi Alhassan, ‘m’, 40 years old and kidnapped the two victims and collected the ransom.

The said Abdullahi Alhassan was also arrested. The suspect further confessed that all the kidnapped victims were killed on the day they were kidnapped. The first victim was killed at the victim’s house while the second victim was killed at the suspect’s house and buried in a shallow grave.

All the bodies (one of which already decayed) were evacuated and deposited at Dawakin Kudu General Hospital. The case will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

12.  ARREST OF TWO (2) SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERS AND RECOVERY OF ROBBED VEHICLE:

On 01/08/2024 at about 08:00 am, report was received from a resident of Amana City, Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano that on the same date at about 03:00am, some unknown armed robbers stormed his house, attacked him and stole away his motor vehicle Toyota Corolla unregistered.

On receipt of the report, team of Anti-Car Theft Unit were directed to recover the vehicle and arrest the suspects. Sustained follow-up coupled with technical intelligence-led operation led to the arrest of two suspects;

(1) Adamu Aliyu, ‘m’, 19 years old, and

(2) Ibrahim Aminu, ‘m’, 20 years old, all of Na’ibawa Quarters, at Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital in Zaria, Kaduna State after they got accident while trying to escape with the vehicle.

The vehicle was also recovered with the investigation on going.
