Kano’s Shatu Garko emerges first Hijab wearing Miss Nigeria in 44 years

An 18-year-old hijab-wearing model Shatu Garko has emerged as Miss Nigeria 2021, making history with her victory in the 44-year-old beauty pageant.

Garko, who represented the North West, beat 17 other contestants to become the first hijab-wearing model to wear the Miss Nigeria crown.

Ms Garko, who hails from Kano State, was also the youngest contestant this year and was crowned at a ceremony held Friday night in Lagos.

The new Miss Nigeria went home with N10m, a 1-year residency at a luxury apartment, a brand new car, and brand ambassadorship opportunities.

The Manager of the Miss Nigeria organisation, who said the pageant showcases the positive attributes of Nigerian women every year, noted that “thousands of applications were received. The number was pruned down to the top 37 and an additional 3 wildcard semi-finalists.

Nicole Ikot emerged the first runner-up while Kasarachi Okoro was the second runner-up.
