King Charles diagnosed with cancer

King Charles has been diagnosed with “a form of cancer” following a hospital procedure on his prostate.

The monarch, 75, was admitted to the London Clinic last week and it was previously reported he intended to take around a month off of his duties.

On Monday, the palace announced the more serious diagnosis, adding that it is not prostate cancer but another form of the disease.

A Buckingham Palace statement released at 6 p.m. U.K. time read: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the
hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are
affected by cancer.”

Kate Middleton was also admitted for abdominal surgery on January 16 and is expected to be away from the public until after Easter.

A Buckingham Palace statement on January 29, prior to the diagnosis, read: “The King was this afternoon discharged from hospital following planned medical treatment and has rescheduled forthcoming public engagements to allow for a period of private recuperation.

“His Majesty would like to thank the medical team and all those involved in supporting his hospital visit, and is grateful for all the kind messages he has received in recent days.”

Prince William is due to return to official duties on Wednesday for the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner at which it is expected he will give a short speech.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said following King Charles’ diagnosis: “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said: “On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish His Majesty all the very best for his recovery. We look forward to seeing him back to swift full health.”
