Minister of Power Engineer Sale Mamman has said that Lagos State alone has eight 330kVA power substations, while the whole of Northern Nigeria has only three.
Speaking to BBC Hausa, the minister said “In the North we don’t have many 330kva substations. In fact, we have only three: one in Kano, one in Kaduna and one in Plateau. These three are servicing the whole north. We can’t have adequate electricity with this arrangement.
“I have observed that in the South, Lagos alone has eight 330kva substations. This is why all the industries in Lagos are up and running, while those in the North are not,” Mamman said.
When asked how the country ended up with a situation where a single state had more substations than a region with 19 states, the minister said “That had already happened. We are not talking about righting the wrongs. We must do that if we want campanies in the north to return to life. We must increase the number of 330kva substations in the North, before we even go to 132…”
Dateline Nigeria reports that inadequate power supply has led to the shutting down of many industries in Kaduna, Kano and Plateau states, with attendant loss of jobs.
