Lawan harps on sacrifice, commitment in leadership

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said on Wednesday that leadership at all levels requires a lot of sacrifice and commitment.

Lawan made the remark when the Yobe State Students Association, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The Students were on excursion to the National Assembly to watch the the Senate in plenary with a view to learning more about parliamentary proceedings.

Addressing the students in his office, Lawan who also hails from Yobe State said leadership should be seen as responsibility to be discharged to the people.

“Leadership at every level requires a lot of sacrifice, a lot of commitment and even when some of our people will say political office are things you can just handle any how, that is not correct.

“When people elect you they give you responsibility and what you do with that office is between you and your God, and of course you are responsible to them as well as to God.

“No matter how small an office is, it is important we continue to do our best to discharge our responsibility,” he said.

The Senate President said Yobe state and the North East zone in general is ranked the poorest in the country by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for a longtime.

“We want to see an improvement in the lives of our people that is why we are in politics,” Lawan said.

The Senate President congratulated the students for finding themselves in the University, a feat he said many young people were not opportuned to achieve.

“Whatever it is, you have shown the commitment to life, your families and your self, and that is what we need in Nigeria. That we are able to re-orient our youths particularly, and of course give them the support they require,” Lawan said.

Earlier, the leader of the association, Mr. Mohammed Idris cited unemployment as the main challenge of the youths in Yobe state and commended the Senate President for the numerous entrepreneurship programmes he initiated for the benefit of his constituents at Yobe North senatorial district.

Idris said the association has designed several entrepreneurship programmes for the benefits of Yobe state students and sought for the intervention of the Senate President to actualise the programmes.
