Man to hang for killing wife in Jigawa

  • Court acquits 3 accused of sexual assault.

The Jigawa State High Court Sitting in Gumel, presided by Justice Abubakar Mohammed Sambo, on Wednesday convicted one Rabiu Mamman of Medin Labo village, Gagarawa Local Government Area and sentenced him to death for the offence culpable Homicide punishable with death.

This is disclosed by the Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, Zainab Baba Santali, in a statement on Saturday.

The facts of the case were that the convict Rabiu Mamman in the year 2016 ambushed his wife in Mesheda bush and hit her with a stick on head which instantly resulted to her death.

The defendant dug a shallow grave and buried her.

In proving the fact of the case, the Prosecution counsel Jamilu Mohammed Esq., called four witnesses and tendered the recorded statements of the defendant.

The defendant testified in his defence by denying the charges against him.

The trial Judge Hon. Justice Abubakar Sambo ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt for the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death.

His Lordship convicted Rabiu Mamman on the first head count charge and sentenced him to death by hanging under the Section 221(b) of the Jigawa State Penal Code Law.

The court further held that the prosecution failed to prove the second head of the charge of giving false information contrary to section 178 of the penal code Jigawa State, as such it acquitted him.

In a separate case, the Jigawa State Chief Judge Hon. Justice Umar M. Sadiq, on Tuesday, discharged and acquitted one Rawi Suleiman for the alleged offence of rape said to have been committed in one village of Ringim Local Government Area sometimes in 2018.

In yet another development, the High Court sitting at Birnin Kudu presided over by Justice Musa Ubale in July discharged and acquitted one Imrana Haruna, m, of Asayaya Village, Jahun LGA of the offence of Rape contrary to Section 282 (1) (e) of the Penal Code, Cap. P3, Laws of Jigawa State, 2012.

Haruna was alleged to have raped a 5-year-old girl.

The same Court had also exonerated one Dalha Hassan, m, of Gadawa Quarters, Jahun LGA, for the offence of sodomy contrary to Section 284 (1) of the Penal Code (Miscellaneous Amendments) Law No. 9, 2014.
