The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has achieved a significant milestone in strengthening national security with the formal establishment of its first permanent presence in Abia State, following the handover of newly constructed office and residential facilities, as well as 120 hectares of land, by the Abia State Government.
Speaking at the ceremony, which was attended by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OA Ihejirika (Rtd), and other distinguished dignitaries, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the development as historic and commended Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his visionary leadership and commitment to strengthening security as the foundation for sustainable development.
The facilities comprise a modern office complex, multiple residential accommodation blocks and the Certificate of Occupancy for 120 hectares of land at Nsulu.
The CAS described the investment as a strategic contribution to Nigeria’s security architecture that will significantly enhance the NAF’s operational effectiveness in the South-East while creating opportunities for socio-economic growth.
He noted that the land provides considerable potential for specialised military training and revealed that the NAF would explore the establishment of a military training institution in Abia State, subject to the necessary approvals.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s belief that security is indispensable for investment, growth and the well-being of the people, expressing confidence that the NAF’s permanent presence would further reinforce peace, stability and public confidence.
Air Marshal Aneke praised the initiative as a model of effective civil-military collaboration and assured the Governor and the people of Abia State that the NAF would justify the confidence reposed in it through disciplined service, responsible stewardship and unwavering professionalism.
The establishment of a permanent NAF presence in Abia State is expected to enhance operational responsiveness to emerging security challenges, deepen collaboration between the Armed Forces and sub-national governments, and further advance the shared objective of a safer, more secure and more prosperous Nigeria.
