NCoS, REA collaborate to enhance inmates’ welfare

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Rural Electrification Agency have agreed to work together to improve electricity supply at the Custodial Centres and other Service formations across the country.

This was revealed during the Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, courtesy visit to the Rural Electrification Agency Headquarters in Abuja.

The Controller General seek the cooperation of REA to extend its rural electrification projects to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

According to him, the Service is a community of its own with several Custodial Centres, Farms and training institutions that are also in need of a constant supply of electricity.

He said, “This is a community that has life and performs like any other community outside. I am here as the Controller General of Corrections to seek ways you can extend your projects to our facilities”.

Nwakuche further spoke on the efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service in reforming and rehabilitating inmates through formal and informal education.

He said a lot is being done through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and farm centres to produce inmates who are ready to contribute positively to society.

In his remark, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, commended CGC Nwakuche for identifying with the agency.

He said the agency is committed to several projects, which include a mini-grid of Solar Hybrid power plant in various Educational and health institutions, as well as support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Aliyu assured the Controller General that the Rural Electrification Agency will collaborate with the Nigerian Correctional Service to provide not only electricity to custodial centres but also empowerment services that will support the reformation and reintegration of inmates back to society as useful citizens.
