NCoS, REA sign deal to power custodial facilities nationwide

In a landmark move to enhance infrastructure and improve living and working conditions across custodial centres, the Federal Government through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) initiative moves to light up all Custodial Centres nationwide.

This initiative culminated in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) officially signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating the electrification process.

The MOU signing ceremony, held at the Lake Greenfield Hotels and Towers, Jabi, Abuja, was witnessed by senior officials from both agencies, other key stakeholders, civil society groups, and the media.

The Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, led the NCoS delegation, while the Managing Director/CEO of REA, Abba Aliyu, represented the agency.

In his remarks, the Controller General conveyed the excitement of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on the partnership. He emphasized that the MoU marks a strategic turning point in the transformation of custodial infrastructure.

“He who brings light, brings life. Reliable and sustainable electricity is critical to achieving a secure, rehabilitative, and reformative correctional system. This partnership will power custodial centers, vocational training workshops, correctional farms, and staff quarters across Nigeria,” CGC Nwakuche stated.

The MoU outlines a framework for collaboration in deploying off-grid renewable energy solutions, with a focus on solar mini-grids, energy efficiency audits, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The partnership also supports the federal government’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving correctional facility standards in line with international best practices.

Speaking on behalf of the REA, the MD/ CEO Mr. Abba Aliyu lauded the Nigerian Correctional Service for taking a bold and forward-thinking step.

“The MOU signing between NCoS and REA was a result of the Controller General’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges of NCoS. Correctional facilities are often overlooked in energy planning. With this MoU, we are expanding the reach of energy equity and reaffirming our mandate to serve all Nigerians, especially those in underserved and critical public institutions,” he said.

The electrification initiative is expected to roll out in phases. This move aligns with national objectives for security, sustainability, and digital transformation across government institutions.

The MoU signing is a strong demonstration of inter-agency collaboration and a shared vision for modernization, security enhancement, and humane correctional management in Nigeria.
