Niger govt delegation joins world leaders in Baku as UN’s COP29 begins

The Niger State Government delegation among other world leaders are gathered in Baku, the Capital of Azerbaijan, as the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) kicks off.

The Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alh. Usman Abubakar led the State delegation to the annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The event is to among other things avail parties concerned the opportunity to negotiate new measures and review progress for the overall goal of the UNFCCC to limit climate change, as captured in the Paris Agreement, which an international treaty on climate change adopted by 196 Parties at the COP21 in Paris, 2015.

The COP29 focuses on reducing emissions, adapting to climate change and addressing damages among other things.

The event is also expected to provide opportunity for the Niger State Agency for Green Initiatives to network with potential NGOs and investors on carbon markets and showcase the State’s ambitious plan on green economy, vast economic potential, and benefits as well as its contribution to Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Net zero emission.

The State delegation will also use the platform to engage with major actors to increase capacity in implementing the State Green Economy blueprint,and attract investments.

The State Government’s delegation also include the Commissioner for Renewable Energy Mohammed Lokogoma, Commissioner for Environment Yakubu Mohammed Kolo and the Special Adviser, special duties Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, special advisers on ecological matters Dr. Habila Daniel among others.
