Troops of the Nigerien Army who toppled the country’s President Mohamed Bazoum have appealed to Russia for help, even as they ask French soldiers and other Western countries to leave Niger.
This is contained in a statement read by the spokesman for the soldiers, Colonel Major Amadu Abdurahamane, on the nation’s television station. He appealed for troops and other logistics from Russia.
Meanwhile the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given the junta seven days to reinstate President Bazoum or face series of sanctions.
The coupists have however accused ECOWAS of plotting military attacks on Niger, adding that they are ready to protect themselves
Colonel Major Amadou also called on the people of Niger to organise street protests in support of the troops.
