Niger police secure multiple convictions, recover stolen vehicles

The Niger State Police Command has recorded a string of arrests and convictions across the state, including a six-year jail term for three suspects involved in transformer cable vandalism in Suleja.

According to a crime bulletin issued July 3, 2026, by Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun, the convictions and arrests cover theft, vandalism, and drug-related offences in Suleja, Mokwa, Minna, and Sarkin-Pawa between June 15 and July 2, 2026.

1. Transformer Vandals Jailed 6 Years in Suleja
On June 25, residents of a housing estate in Maje reported vandalisation and theft of transformer cables to Maje Division. Police arrested Thankgod Israel, 21, and Hamza Umar, 17, both residents of the estate. The suspects confessed and named Auwalu Idris, 40, of Kaduna Road as their receiver.

Police recovered an armoured cable, saw blade, spanners, and other items. All three were arraigned before a Suleja magistrate court on June 30 and each sentenced to 6 years imprisonment without an option of fine.

2. Suspected Motorcycle Thief Arrested in Abuja
A Kwamba resident reported on June 18 that his Bajaj motorcycle was stolen from Kwamba motor park on May 10. He suspected Mohammed Yahaya, 31, a former commercial rider he had dismissed over non-remittance of payments.

On June 19, Yahaya was sighted with the motorcycle around Kubwa, Abuja. Police mobilised, arrested him, and recovered the motorcycle. He has been charged to court.

3. ₦646,000 ATM Theft Traced to Victim’s Friend
On June 29, a man from Angwan-Gwari, Kwamba, reported his ATM card was stolen from his room on June 27 and over ₦600,000 transferred from his account. He initially suspected a female friend, Bunmi, who was arrested but cleared.

During questioning, Bunmi named Kabiru Abidola, 51, also a friend of the victim, who had visited on the said date. Abidola was arrested and confessed to stealing the card. Police traced ₦646,000 moved to his account. He said the victim often sent him with the card for transactions. He will be charged to court.

4. Stolen Truck, Motorcycle Recovered in Mokwa
Acting on intelligence, Mokwa Division intercepted a trailer with registration DAL 385 YL on July 1 at Sawmill area. The truck was stolen from Ibafo, Ogun State, on June 29. Driver Aminu Mohammed was arrested and confessed he was heading to Kano to sell it. Ogun State Police Command has been contacted.

Separately on July 2, patrol officers on Mokwa-Jebba road arrested Mustapha Muhammad and Attahiru Muhammad of Mokwa removing side covers from an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle. They confessed it was stolen from Mokwa General Hospital. The theft was confirmed by hospital staff. Investigation is ongoing.

5. Six Arrested for Cannabis, Vandalised Cables
In Minna and Sarkin-Pawa, six suspects were arrested for drug possession and vandalism.

On June 15, Kpakungu Division arrested Musbau Yunusa, 22, in Gurara with suspected cannabis. On June 17, three others — Hussaini Yusuf, 26; Ahmed Mohammed, 22; and Kabiru Yakubu, 21 — were arrested in a raid in Gurara with suspected cannabis. All four were charged on June 22 and sentenced to 8 months imprisonment without option of fine.

On June 29, Sarkin-Pawa Division arrested Ahmed Abdullahi, 20, of Mangoro and Moses Ali, 22, of Jafulu Sabon-gari with suspected cannabis and vandalised cables they were attempting to sell.

The Niger State Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling crime across the state, according to SP Wasiu Abiodun.
