Nigeria police mourn 17 officers killed in Yobe terrorist attack

The Nigeria Police Force is mourning 17 officers killed in a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of May 8, 2026.

According to a statement from the Force Headquarters, the officers were undergoing specialized operational training at the institution when gunmen launched a coordinated assault on the facility from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m. Several Nigerian Army personnel also died while repelling the attack.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the fallen officers as courageous and dedicated personnel who showed exceptional patriotism through their participation in advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training programs.

“The IGP conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the entire Force to the bereaved families, assuring them that the sacrifices of the deceased officers will never be forgotten,” the statement said.

On behalf of the IGP, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the school to commiserate with the Commandant, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, officers of the Nigerian Army, and surviving police personnel still in training.

He commended the survivors’ resilience and urged them to complete the program in honor of their fallen colleagues.

The IGP assured Nigerians that the Police Force, working with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, would sustain efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
