The National Mosque in Abuja has made history with the appointment of Professor Ilyas Usman as its first Igbo Imam.
As the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, Professor Usman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role.
He will join forces with the two active Imams, Professors Ibrahim Makari and Muhammad Kabir, in leading Juma’ah and daily congregational prayers at the 25,000-capacity mosque.
This development is particularly significant, given that the fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura from Southwest Nigeria, has been unable to lead prayers due to health issues.
Professor Usman’s appointment marks a milestone for the Igbo Muslim community in Nigeria.
The South East Muslims Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON) has congratulated him, praising his dedication and scholarly excellence.
In a statement, SEMON noted that this prestigious role is not only a testament to Professor Usman’s commitment but also a divine blessing and responsibility to lead the Ummah in worship and service to Allah.
“We pray that Allah grants Professor Usman the wisdom, strength, and steadfastness to discharge this sacred duty with diligence, integrity, and humility,” SEMON stated.
The organization also commended the leadership of the National Mosque and Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) for fostering inclusivity under the presidency of His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
SEMON hopes that Professor Usman’s appointment will uplift the Igbo Muslim community in Nigeria, showcasing their contributions and dedication to Islam and the Ummah at large.
