Release prisoners if you can’t prosecute them, judge tells Kano Attorney General

A Kano State High Court judge, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, has the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Isa Dederi, to release all inmates in the state correctional facilities if he is too busy to diligently prosecute their cases.

“You can’t keep someone in prison and tell me the office of the attorney-general is busy. When you file a charge, it is your responsibility to prosecute. If you are too busy to prosecute, then release them,” Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, said in court on Wednesday.

In a particular case, the Nigerian Sketch reported, the judge observed that state counsel appeared to become less serious as they get promoted in civil service. A counsel however responded that the office of the attorney-general is a busy one.

The judge asked if the attorney-general’s office has a responsibility bigger than prosecution.

According to her, “The busiest things the office of the attorney-general does is to prosecute. If you do not prosecute, what else do you do? In the past few days, cases couldn’t go on. It is not funny.

“All these people, their liberty were restrained, and I feel pained when a state counsel does not come to court, or he comes only to adjourn.”
