Sanitation: Kwara Govt clears refuse at Akerebiata bridge

As part of activities marking this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day, the Kwara State Government through the Ministry of Environment have mobilized personnel to evacuate the illegal dumpsite along Akerebiata Abattoir/bridge in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the State.

Speaking during the exercise, the
Commissioner for Environment,
Hajiya Nafisat Buge who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, said the exercise was aimed at ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all residents of the state.

The Commissioner who reminded community members present that the ongoing outbreak of cholera in some parts of the country calls for concerted efforts from all and sundry, assured that the Kwara State Government under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will not rest on its oars at ensuring that the State continues to be free from the outbreak of cholera.

In her words, “as we celebrate this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day, the State Government under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is committed to maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment. This is why various measures have been put in place to forestall outbreak of diseases, especially the ongoing cholera, which is already ravaging some states in the country, she stated.

“We are killing many birds with one stone, just as the National Environmental Sanitation day is marked on June 28th annually, we also need to be wary and proactive in keeping cholera and other diseases at bay, while we undertake our monthly sanitation exercise accordingly.”

She therefore enjoined residents to join hands with the State Government in ensuring a clean environment and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse especially on river banks and road medians.

Responding on behalf of residents of Mountain View Estate, Akerebiata area, Alhaji Mahmud Mohammed Erubu appreciated the State Government for coming to their aid in evacuating the dupmpsite.

He however exonerated members of his community from culpability in the dump site, saying that it was created by passersby who bring refuse with their cars to drop there.

Erubu therefore called for effective collaboration between the community and the Ministry for effective monitoring of the area and possible arrest and prosecution of offenders caught.
