The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has expressed grave concern over recent statements made by Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, saying they are inflammatory and could worsen religious tensions, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Secretary General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the SCSN called on security agencies to urgently investigate Dachomo’s comments and take necessary legal actions, emphasizing that anyone who incites hatred or violence should be held accountable.
The council highlighted Islam’s commitment to peace and protecting human life, citing the Quran. They also urged Nigerian leaders, both Muslim and Christian, to condemn such statements and work towards harmony, while calling on the government to address insecurity across the country.
The SCSN also paid tribute to victims of terrorism and violence, including security personnel who lost their lives in defense of the nation.
See SCSN’s statement below:
ON RECKLESS RELIGIOUS INCITEMENT AND NATIONAL SECURITY
1) The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) expresses grave concern over the recent reckless and provocative inflammatory statements by Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, which contains dangerous abusive insinuations against Islam and the Nigerian Muslim Ummah, capable of compounding already existing religious tension in our fragile communities, particularly across Northern Nigeria.
2) At a time when our nation is battling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violent criminality, it is deeply troubling that certain individuals continue to make provocative statements capable of undermining the fragile peaceful coexistence and national stability. Such reckless utterances are not only irresponsible but potentially dangerous, as they risk inflaming passions and sowing distrust among communities that have lived together peacefully for generations.
3) The Council therefore calls on all relevant security and law-enforcement agencies to urgently investigate these statements and take the necessary legal actions against Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo in accordance with the laws of Nigeria. It must be clearly stated that any individual, Muslim or Christian, who engages in reckless incitement, hate speech, or deliberate attempts to provoke religious hostility must be held accountable.
4) Nigerians have suffered for too long from crises fuelled by irresponsible rhetoric and deliberate provocation by unscrupulous conflict merchants who manipulate religion and identity to pursue a selfish agenda. These religious entrepreneurs and merchants of division thrive on tension, chaos, and mistrust, while ordinary Nigerians bear the brunt and tragic consequences in the form of violence, displacement, and loss of innocent lives. Their actions must be decisively confronted by the authorities before they plunge communities into avoidable crises.
5) The Council urges security agencies to act swiftly and decisively, because experience has repeatedly shown that unchecked hate speech and incitement often serve as the spark that ignites a conflagration of violent conflicts. Preventing such escalation is therefore an urgent and fundamental responsibility of the state.
6) The Council reiterates that Islam stands firmly for peace, justice, and the sanctity of human life. The Holy Qur’an clearly reminds humanity: “Whoever kills a soul, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” (Qur’an 5:32). This profound teaching reflects Islam’s unwavering commitment to the protection of life and peaceful coexistence among
people of different faiths and backgrounds.
7) The Council strongly supports all genuine initiatives by government, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community groups aimed at promoting peace, dialogue, tolerance, and harmony within our diverse society. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and our religious and ethnic differences must never be allowed to become instruments of division.
8) Accordingly, the Council also calls on Muslim and Christian leaders across the country to jointly reject and condemn reckless statements that promote hatred or hostility, regardless of who makes them. Responsible religious leadership requires wisdom, restraint, and a sincere commitment to peace. Silence in such situations is complicity.
9) At the same time, the Council calls on the government of Nigeria to take more decisive, coordinated, and effective action to confront the escalating insecurity across the country, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where millions of citizens continue to suffer from terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks on communities
10) The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria also mourns all victims of terrorism and violence across the country. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and communities who have lost loved ones to these senseless attacks. In particular, we pay tribute to our fallen heroes including members of the Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation. Their courage, dedication, and patriotism will forever remain a source of national pride and gratitude.
11)Nigeria stands at a critical moment. The preservation of peace and stability requires responsible speech, moral leadership, and firm action against those who deliberately incite hatred, division, or violence. We therefore urge all Nigerians to remain calm, reject provocation, and continue to uphold the enduring values of peace, restraint, tolerance, and national unity.
