Tributes as Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu dies at 72

Nigerians have taken to the social media to mourn the reported death of legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu at the age of 72.

The music icon reportedly d!ed on Tuesday night, July 30, at the Reddington Hospital, Lagos after performing at a birthday party in Lagos.

According to a source close to the family, Onwenu was attending a friend’s birthday party when she took to the stage to perform.

“After her performance, she returned to her seat and suddenly slumped. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was later pronounced dead, the source said.

The cause of de@th is yet to be confirmed.

Onyeka Onwenu, born on May 31, 1952, had a career that spanned over four decades. She was not only a renowned singer and songwriter but also an actress, journalist, and politician. Her first album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984.

Some of her most popular songs include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.

Meanwhile Nigerians from diverse background have continued to mourn the late singer on social media.

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri wrote on Facebook: “I am heartbroken at the news of the death of veteran singer, broadcaster, and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, at 72. I knew her, and we bonded over my love for her music, which added value to my early years. It was one of the greatest honours of my life to collaborate with her and Panam Percy Paul on a charity single I executive produced.

“She was called the Elegant Stallion for a reason. And the reason is that she elevated music and artistry with her natural charm and stage presence. Onyeka Onwenu was a great asset to Nigeria and a significant star on the African continent and beyond. She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in peace!”

A journalist Simon Reef Musa also wrote on his Facebook page “This Lady of Songs was an inspiration to many people. One of her classics, ‘One Love’ remains a signature of her creativity. God touched her when she was needed the most. However, we are immensely grateful to God that she lived a fulfilled life. Her works have immortalized her memory and will continue to inspire future generations. May her soul rest in perfect peace!”
