Uba Sani grants waiver on title of Abubakar Gumi College to make way for university, nursing school

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has approved a waiver of all financial obligations associated with the title of Abubakar Gumi College, Tudun Wada, Kaduna, to pave way for the establishment of Abubakar Gumi University and the Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi School of Nursing Sciences.

The waiver, described as a move to advance education and preserve the legacy of the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi, a renowned educationist and philanthropist, followed consultations between Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and the Chanchangi family.

Abubakar Gumi College was established by the late Chanchangi in Tudun Wada, a community largely inhabited by people of modest means, providing children of less privileged families, including many orphans, with quality Western education in the morning and Islamic education in the afternoon.

At its peak, the school attracted students from within and beyond the community and had expatriate teachers in both sections, earning Chanchangi recognition within and outside Nigeria.

Following his demise, efforts to reposition the institution, which sits on a vast expanse of land, led to the proposal to establish a university and a school of nursing on its premises.

The state government said it recognised the importance of the initiative and stepped in to facilitate its actualisation.

With the waiver, development of the proposed institutions is expected to commence in earnest, reviving the historic legacy of the college and creating new opportunities for higher education and professional training for youths in Kaduna State and beyond.
