VAR Controversy: I think what happened was fair – Zidane

Zinedine Zidane believes Real Madrid were rightly awarded a penalty in the closing stages of their win over Real Betis.

Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea pointed to the spot when Marc Bartra was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

“There’s a referee and they reviewed it,” Zidane said at full time. “I think what happened is fair.

“[The referee] is the one in charge.

“I never get involved with referees and I’m not going to today.

“The most important thing is the match we played. We gave everything.

“It was a tough game against a team that had won two games.

“We’re happy, satisfied with the job done. We suffered and got the three points.”

Thibaut Courtois played a key role in helping Los Blancos stay in the game throughout.

“He was [decisive], like in many matches recently,” Zidane added.

“Real Sociedad also had a clear chance [last weekend] and he saved us.

“Today, it happened again.

“We know what he can do and I also like what he does with the ball, playing out from the back.

“I’m happy with his game and how things went for the team.”

Zidane made the surprise decision to start Luka Jovic up front alongside Karim Benzema.

“I was looking to play in the opposition half with a different strategy,” the Real Madrid boss explained.

“We can play in lots of different ways and that’s one of them, with two strikers.

“We can be happy with the game, with the three points.”

On possible transfer activity before the October 5 deadline, Zidane remained coy over Real Madrid’s business.

“I’m happy with the squad that I have,” he said.

“We are what we are and we’re going to try to have a good season.”
