Why I withdrew my son from public school, by El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has explained why he withdrew his son Abubakar Sadiq from Kaduna Capital School, a public institution in the state.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, El-Rufai said he withdrew Sadiq and his sister Nesrin, who joined this year after clocking six years, so as not to put the lives of other pupils in danger.

“We had to temporarily withdraw them from the school based on advice from security agents after intercepting reports indicating that at least two groups were planning to attack the school and kidnap my son.

“I know they will not succeed because we have enough security there to prevent it, but we don’t want to put other children in danger.

“We don’t know the type of weapons they will come with. I have taken a stand against paying bandits, so they want to kidnap my son and see if I will insist on not paying ransom,” El-Rufai said.

The governor said his son is now receiving lesson at home but will still go to the school to write his exams.

El-Rufai had in a state broadcast in December 2017 promised to enroll his child in a public school which he did in September 2019.

“We are determined to fix public education and raise their standards so that private education will become only a luxury,” he said at the time.
