A 25-year-old woman, Musa Zainab Abeke, appears before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over allegations of obtaining N420,000 by false pretences.
Zainab, whose residential address is not disclosed, faces a two-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read before the court on Thursday.
Prosecuting counsel, ASP Simon Njue, told the court that the alleged offences occurred on July 21 at about 11.00 a.m. in Ijegun, Ikotun, Lagos.
Njue alleged that Zainab obtained N420,000 from Mrs Deborah Olukoya under the pretence of preparing herbal treatment to help her conceive.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant subsequently converted the money to her personal use instead of delivering the promised service.
He said the alleged offences contravene Sections 314 and 287 of the Lagos State Criminal Law.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes a 15-year prison term for fraud upon conviction.
NAN further reports that Section 287 provides a three-year prison sentence for stealing upon conviction.
Magistrate F.R. Ogunkoyode granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like amount.
Ogunkoyode subsequently adjourned the matter until Aug. 18 for mention. (NAN)
