Zanzibar to build $1.3bn skyscraper

Zanzibar has announced plans to build sub-Saharan Africa’s tallest skyscraper a cost of $1.3bn (£950 million).

The 70-storey Zanzibar Domino Commercial Tower will exceed the semi-autonomous archipelago’s annual budget by more than 60%, AFP news agency reports.

It will involve a man-made island with a marina for yachts and cruise ships.

The finished project plans to house 560 apartments, luxury hotels, resorts, a golf course and a wedding chapel.

A government minister in Zanzibar was quoted as saying that the project would bolster “the government’s efforts in inviting more local and foreign investors to the isles”.

A timeline for completion is yet to be announced. (BBC)
