Aisha Buhari completes 130-day mandatory waiting period

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday, completed her Iddah, the 130-mandatory waiting period a Muslim woman observes after the death of her husband.

Aisha’s husband and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025 in a London hospital.

The former first lady observed the last day of the waiting period in the midst of family members, friends and associates, where prayers were offered for the late former president, and for peace in the country.

A close family member said the former first lady observed her four months and 10 days of Iddah with patience, dignity, and deep faith in Allah’s decree.

She prayed to Almighty Allah to “heal her heart, ease her steps into this new chapter, surround her with tranquillity and mercy, and bless her with a future filled with strength, clarity, and endless barakah. May the soul of late former President Muhammadu Buhari rest in Aljanntul Firdausi.”

In Islam, while observing Iddah, a woman cannot remarry. She is also restricted from leaving her house unnecessarily.

Dateline Nigeria reports that the late Muhammadu Buhari and Aisha got married in 1989. Their union is blessed with five children.
