
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) continues the implementation of various counter trafficking policies, programmes, and initiatives today, with the successful inauguration of the Abia State Task Force on Human Trafficking, in Umuahia, Abia State Capital, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The inauguration was performed by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex C. Otti, represented by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, in the company of the Director General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, the Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration (IOM), Sharon Dimanche, represented by the Migration Protection Officer, Chibalani Katongo, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, Wife of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Adaeze Chidera Emetu, and other members of the Abia State Executive Council.
In his speech, the Governor, who described human trafficking as a grave violation of human dignity, betrayer of trust, and gross violation of the rights of the victims, stated that the inauguration of the Task Force was a strategic and purposeful step to stamp out human trafficking and other related crimes from the State.
While assuring the Task Force of the desired result, the Governor urged members to see the new assignment as a call to duty to restore hope and ensure an assured future for the citizens of the State.

In her speech, the Director General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, stated that Human Trafficking remains one of the most troubling forms of transnational organised crime, eroding human dignity and undermining national development. Human trafficking is not just a policy issue—it is a human tragedy, advocated collective efforts to tackle the menace.
She said, “Today’s inauguration of the Task Force is therefore, not just another ceremony—it is a clear statement that Abia State is ready to take ownership of the fight against human trafficking. It is about bringing the fight closer to the communities where it is needed most.

“This Task Force will help us reach the grassroots, support victims, share information more effectively, and strengthen enforcement. But more importantly, it will help us prevent people from becoming victims in the first place”.
In her speech, the Chief of Mission, IOM, Sharon Dimanche, disclosed that the inauguration of the Abia State Task Force on Human Trafficking makes it the 16th Task Force to be inaugurated with the Organization’s support across Nigeria.
She assured the Task Force of the needed support within its thematic areas.
The Task Force, which is made up of representatives of critical partners, State and Non-State Actors, and stakeholders, has as its chairman the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, with NAPTIP Abia State Commander, Mrs. Okafor Nkemdilim, as the Co-Chair.
