The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026, following an internal disciplinary review.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, was found to have acted in “gross violation” of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.
The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) concluded that his actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the police oath to protect life.
All officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for expedited disciplinary proceedings.
The FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
Once administrative procedures are completed, the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial shooting.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power,” the IGP said. “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
IGP Disu extended condolences to Ogidi’s family, acknowledging their pain and assuring them that the case will not be treated lightly.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to ensuring justice is both served and seen to be served to reinforce public confidence and accountability.
The police urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the process continues.
