Former Senate President and Yobe North Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan has formally accepted the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s decision to nominate former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.
In a statement addressed to his constituents, Lawan said he had accepted the decision “in good faith” on behalf of his supporters, emphasizing party unity over personal ambition.
“As we stand today at a critical crossroad in the political journey of our beloved Yobe State and our great party, the APC, I have called for this moment of reflection,” he said. “Politics is never about the desire and aspiration of one man; it is about the survival and progress of the whole people.”
Lawan acknowledged that many of his supporters had held different aspirations but urged them to embrace the party’s choice in the “spirit of Yobe North.” He described Wali’s nomination as an answer to prayers for someone from the zone to serve as governor for the first time since Yobe’s creation.
“On your behalf, I extend my hand of fellowship to Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, and pledge my full support to ensure that APC wins not only the gubernatorial election, but all the other elections in 2027,” he stated.
The former Senate President called on his supporters to return to their wards with a message of calm and to work for the success of the APC from top to bottom. He stressed that the party must approach 2027 “not as a divided house, but as an indomitable political force.”
Lawan’s statement effectively ends speculation about his own governorship ambition and signals a move to consolidate the APC ahead of the 2027 polls. He also reaffirmed support for President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid.
“May God bless the Unity Movement. May God bless the Yobe North Senatorial District. May God bless Yobe State. And may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he concluded.
