Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a 48-year-old commercial motorcycle rider, Onyechere Daniel Chinadu, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, over 100 wraps of methamphetamine weighing 1.715 kilograms.
The suspect was intercepted on Saturday, 28th June 2026, at the Terminal 2 Arrival Hall of the airport following his arrival from Madagascar via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airways flight, the agency said in a statement on Sunday.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said a thorough search of the suspect’s checked-in backpack led to the discovery of 87 wraps of methamphetamine concealed inside clothes.
During interrogation, Onyechere said he had worked as an ‘Okada rider’ in the Oke-Afo area of Lagos for 15 years before he was recruited into drug trafficking by his Uganda-based friend.
He told operatives that he ingested pellets of methamphetamine in Uganda before traveling to Madagascar to deliver the consignment. However, he was denied entry by immigration authorities in Madagascar.
His sponsor, identified as Ozor Igo based in Uganda, subsequently rerouted his flight to Lagos where he was arrested by NDLEA officers.
Because the suspect could not state the exact number of pellets he had ingested, he was placed under excretion observation for three days.
Between the date of his arrest and 1st July, he excreted an additional 13 pellets. This brought the total to 100 wraps of methamphetamine with a gross weight of 1.715kg.
While commending the officers involved in the operation, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), urged them not to rest on their past achievements.
The suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court, the Agency said.
