Bandits abduct 12 police officers in Zamfara

The wives of Assistant superintendents of Police (ASPs) abducted by bandits in Zamfara State have raised concern over the fate of the husbands even as they called on the authorities to help secure their freedom.

The police officers who were travelling from Borno State when they were seized between Katsina and Zamfara states by the gunmen about 10 days ago, according to BBC Hausa.

The families of the policemen told the BBC that the abducted cops were going to Zamfara for special assignment.

A wife to one of the abducted police officers said when she didn’t hear from her husband for three days she went to their barracks in Borno and that was where she learnt of the abduction. She said two of the police officers who escaped were the ones who called the headquarters and broke the news.

The woman said she later spoke with her husband where he informed her of his condition in captivity.

“It was on Wednesday that he called, asking me to mortgage his house even if it is for N1 million. He said failure to meet the demands of their abductors would cause problem,” she said.

She said since then she has not heard from her husband again but that a police officer called her, urging them to hasten and get the ransom money ready.

“He said we should contribute N800,000 each. We are tryjng to do that. We don’t know our fate, we can’t even sleep. May Almighty Allah return them safely to us,” the woman said.

She said the wife of another abducted officer has died and left behind five children that are now at the pooice barracks in Borno State.

The BBC said attempts to speak with the police authorities in Zamfara and Katsina states did not yield much as both denied knowledge of the abduction.
